Telecommunication sector in Nigeria has experienced a steady growth in the last decade, with the liberalization of the sector from the shackles of the monopoly it suffered by the hands of the federal government, whose reputation for managing institutions is rated immature or rather
corrupt. Without drifting too much Let's get down to the real juice or crux of the topic.

Brief History

In time past the telecommunications sector in Nigeria was a monopoly of the the federal governments interest. In other words they called the shots. The one and only telecommunications company that existed then was called NITEL (Nigeria Telecommunication), as the name suggests, it was owned and run by the federal government of Nigeria the way they see fit, not paying attention to the quality of service rendered or if they turned in a profit so long as worker's salary gets paid. 

All these changed with the privatization of the telecommunication sector by president Olusegun Obasanjo in the year 2001. Now that you know this brief history, you are now prepared for the information that you seek.

List of Nigeria mobile operators 

Here I shall introduce a handful of mobile operators in Nigeria as at the date of this write up 31/10/2013.

The above four listed operators are the major well established Telecom operators in Nigeria. they seem to have a footprint accross most if not all towns and villages accross the nation. While the underlisted are likely to be found only in urban areas with very little footprint nationwide
